Peer Specialist has the responsibility of emphasizing the acquisition, development, and expansion of recovery skills to enable individuals to fully engage in their recovery journey. The interventions they provide are based on the therapeutic relationship they build with the individual and their family. As part of the team, helps clients develop essential skills, access recovery tools and community support, and motivates them to achieve and maintain recovery. Key responsibilities include collaborating with individuals to develop personalized treatment plans, maintaining communication with referral sources and guardians, participating in meetings for continuity of care, assisting in researching and referring individuals to outside resources, scheduling treatment appointments and providing transportation, accompanying clients to appointments, supporting clients in accessing medical services, offering crisis intervention, facilitating group education sessions, pursuing professional development, utilizing peer support to foster recovery and resilience, helping individuals build community connections, assisting in accessing information and support for mental health and substance use disorders, supporting independent choices in treatment, helping identify strengths and resources for recovery, mentoring, advocacy, coaching, providing emotional and instructional support, encouraging a healthy and sober lifestyle, aiding in creating personal treatment plans, adhering to ethical and confidentiality standards, and showing interest in company goals. Knowledge and skills required include personal recovery experience, ability to share recovery skills, knowledge of case management and rehabilitation methods, understanding of challenges faced by individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders, familiarity with legal requirements and court procedures, communication skills, ability to connect clients to recovery resources, and general computer knowledge. Experience and education qualifications include willingness to self-identify as a present or former client or person in recovery, one year of direct experience with the mental health system, completion of a state-approved Certified Peer Support training program within six months of employment, high school education or equivalent, and two years of responsible employment history. Missouri-specific requirements include completing a 5-Day Basic Training Program and passing a State of Missouri approved certification examination within six months if required.
