Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third-largest school district in the United States, serving over 340,000 students in 600+ schools and employing nearly 36,000 people, most of them teachers. CPS has set ambitious goals to ensure that every student, in every school and every neighborhood, has access to a world-class learning experience that prepares each for success in college, career, and civic life. In order to fulfill this mission, we make three commitments to our students, their families, and all Chicagoans: academic progress, financial stability, and integrity. Six core values are embedded within these commitments - student-centered, whole child, equity, academic excellence, community partnership, and continuous learning. Position Summary The Home and Hospital Instruction Program (HHIP) oversees eligibility procedures and instruction resources for students who are unable to access classroom instruction as a result of a diagnosed medical or psychiatric condition. As a Citywide Home, Hospital and Treatment Center Teacher, you will provide instruction in the home setting, in small groups or individually at bedside in an array of hospitals and treatment centers located throughout the city of Chicago. The candidate must be creative and flexible regarding site location, work hours, travel, parking, and delivery settings as caseloads are modified based on the daily census at the hospital and requests for homebound services submitted at the school level. The selected teacher will maintain direct contact on a regular basis with medically challenged students and must evidence, or be willing to obtain, required immunizations prior to hiring. Many of the students on the Citywide Home, Hospital and Treatment Center Teachers' caseload are critically ill and require a teacher with the ability to remain focused on academics while being sensitive to the life threatening conditions such as inoperable brain tumors or devastating side effects of chemotherapy and motor and cognitive issues secondary to traumatic brain injury. Some students receive instruction at bedside in the hospital and may be connected to a variety of tubes, lines and other medical equipment. Other students may present with behavior and emotional disorders including explosive episodes of anger, severe depression, irrational mood swings, bipolarism and schizophrenia. Instruction provided to this population of students is facilitated in residential treatment centers where they are continuously supervised and monitored. Finally, some students will require remote or in-person instruction in their home setting as a result of a medical or psychiatric diagnosis that impedes their ability to attend school to participate in a full day of classroom instruction.
