The International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking graduate and law students for an internship based in an HRW Office in New York, Brussels, or Washington D.C. The internship will run from mid‑to‑late January 2026 to early‑mid April 2026 (16–18 hours per week). Candidates will monitor international law developments, research and draft papers on international justice, and develop skills in legal research, writing, and advocacy. Responsibilities Conduct legal research and analyze international law. Review and document media reports on relevant issues. Monitor developments at the International Criminal Court. Perform policy analysis of ongoing international justice developments. Identify and understand key issues in international justice. Compile case research and draft advocacy‑style documents. Gain familiarity with the Rome Statute, footnoting, and fact‑checking. Present information clearly in internal drafts. Qualifications Graduate or law students at a master’s or law program (Belgium: duration of internship; U.S.: enrolled for duration). Background in law (LLB, LLM, JD, or equivalent) highly desirable. Strong interest in international criminal justice and demonstrated commitment to human rights. Relevant coursework preferred. Fluency in English required; French an advantage. Computer skills (Microsoft Office, internet applications) essential. Valid work authorization in the United States or Belgium for the full internship term. Compensation U.S. interns: paid $17.00 per hour plus 20 days of vacation prorated. Belgium interns: reimbursed for lunch and travel; recent graduates receive a gross stipend of €1,055.94 per month. Compensation varies by jurisdiction per HRW policy.
