Title: Head Football Athletic Coach (Brooke High School)

Qualifications: Certification or licensure as required by the West Virginia Board of Education and the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities
Commission. Experience in both classroom teaching and area of specialty preferred.

Reports to: Principal, Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, or designee as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Job Goals: To direct all of the activities, normally associated with coaching, including sign ups, practice sessions, games, drills, etc.

Job Duration: Coaching contract shall terminate and/or renewed annually at the end of the designated school year or may be terminated at any time for just cause pursuant to the West Virginia Code §18A-2-8 or by the mutual consent of the parties.

Job Goals:
  • To prepare athletes for the next level of competition with an emphasis on fundamental skills instruction and principles of the game.
  • To attend professional development courses and clinics that focus on improving coaching techniques, strategies, team philosophy and leadership.
  • To direct all of the activities normally associated with coaching including sign-ups, practice sessions, games, drills, etc. for high school grades nine through twelve.
  • To work with the middle school coaches to create a feeder system for the high school with a shared systematic philosophy emphasizing techniques and terminology.


Duties:
  • Implement the rules and regulations set forth by the West Virginia Board of Education, West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC), Brooke County Board of Education, Brooke High School, and the Athletic Department.

  • Hold regular meetings with your staff, including pre-season and post-season meetings.
  • Schedule interscholastic events in your sport with the assistance of the Athletic Department.
  • Arrange meetings with and/or training for middle school coaches prior to the start of the middle school program.
  • Work with the high school staff and the middle school staff so that they can learn and implement the schematic philosophies of the varsity program in order to facilitate the learning process of all players and to facilitate the assimilation of middle school players into the varsity program.
  • Conduct tryouts, if applicable to your sport.
  • Submit eligibility lists, team rosters, parent consent forms and insurance forms to the Athletic Director and/ or Athletic Trainer as required.
  • Develop and implement team rules, with consequences, and in accordance with the Brooke County Student Handbook and Brooke County policy.
  • Announce and enforce rules and regulations pertaining to safe participation in accordance with WVSSAC policy by demonstrating and teaching the necessary skills and practices.
  • Organize daily practices and provide written plans to the Athletic Director upon request.
  • Rate officials as required by the WVSSAC.
  • Evaluate player performance. This includes evaluation for post-season awards and/or recognition by the WVSSAC, OVAC, or other organization(s).
  • Promote and supervise off-season conditioning programs.
  • Supervise preparation of game day equipment and field/game surface maintenance.
  • Supervise student managers, scorekeepers, and student trainers.
  • Provide for direct supervision of student athletes in the locker rooms, during practice, contests, or travel and in the weight room.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment and uniforms, including distribution of equipment and uniforms at the beginning of the season and collection and storage of equipment and uniforms at the end of the season.
  • Inspecting equipment and field of play for safety.
  • Recommend to the Athletic Director the purchase of equipment, supplies, uniforms, etc., which are within the athletic budget.
  • Scout opposing teams, including utilizing the HUDL program.
  • Maintain all required contest scores and statistics.
  • Assisting athletes who are pursuing their athletic career at the collegiate level.
  • At the conclusion of the season, provide the Athletic Director with...
    • Complete and final team roster,
    • Game scores and records for all levels,
    • List of all lettering athletes,
    • List of all special award, participation athletes,
    • Uniform and equipment inventory,
    • Verification of completion of official's ratings,
    • Anything requested by the Athletic Director
  • Effectively communicate with parents/guardians...
    • Coaching philosophies,
    • Team rules and regulations,
    • Expectations of athletes, and
    • Parent support and involvement.
  • Develop a positive rapport and work cooperatively with booster groups in order to support their efforts in assisting the sport.
  • Take advantage of all practice days, including Saturdays and holidays, prior to the first contest.
  • Establish a strength and conditioning program appropriate to the sport and provide supervision to ensure the safety and development of athletes.
  • Pursue professional development by joining professional organizations and participating in clinic sessions held by the head coach or other experts in the field.
  • Attend all West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletics Commission (WVSSAC), Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC),meetings required of your sport or as required by the head coach, the athletic director, and/or principal.
  • Address any issues that may arise by following the proper chain of command.
  • Abide by the policies set forth in the Brooke High School Coaches' Handbook.
  • Follow all purchasing procedures established by the athletic department, the Board of Education and the West Virginia State Auditor's Manual. ALL purchases must be pre-approved and a purchase order (PO) assigned prior to placing an order.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the head coach, the assistant athletic director, the athletic director, the assistant principal, the principal, the superintendent of schools or his/her designee.


Employment Term: Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance
with Policy 5310 and the provisions of Brooke County Board of Education Policy of Evaluation of Coaches.
