Under minimal supervision, performs supervisory functions over professional nursing and support staff in an inpatient unit, specialty clinic, or treatment program in various patient care settings. Under general supervision, adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics (2015) to provide care to all patients. Applies critical thinking, evidence-based policies, procedures, guidelines and competence to collaborate with the health care team to promote excellence in patient safety and quality outcomes. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. The Correctional Care nursing staff provides clinical care at either Downtown Detention Center or the Denver County Jail. These environments of care have a higher level of clinical acuity and environmental hazard than inpatient and ambulatory nursing settings based on the nature of the facility. The detention centers employ a high level of security, which impacts daily working conditions, including both personal and institutional safety and clinical operations. Environmental awareness, critical thinking, and decisive, decision-making skills are required in the correctional care setting. Essential Functions include oversight of department/unit for assigned shift including adherence to policy, maintaining a broad and comprehensive nursing scope of practice including infant, pediatric, and adult clinical care, preventive care, emergent care/crisis response, triage skills, general acute care skills, behavioral health skills, specialty skills such as eating disorders, oncological care, and IV therapy, delegation of duties amongst nursing and support staff, preparation of daily staffing assignments, oversight of patient care, admissions, and discharges, oversight of daily operations and escalation of communications, mentoring, evaluation and documentation of performance of nursing staff, and facilitating patient flow. Education required is completion of an accredited nursing education program that satisfies the licensing requirements of the Colorado State Board of Nursing for Registered Nurses. Work experience required is typically a minimum of two years of professional nursing experience in a patient care setting; correctional care experience preferred. Licenses required include RN-Registered Nurse - DORA, BLS-Basic Life Support, and ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Knowledge, skills, and abilities include adherence to standards of professional nursing practice, strong customer service principles, ability to promote quality patient-centric care, ability to work effectively in a team matrix environment, ability to communicate clearly and effectively, ability to work closely with multidisciplinary staff, ability to demonstrate understanding of assessment findings, proficiency in EHR, and basic office suite skills preferred. Shift is rotating (days and nights).
