Full-Time, with Benefits

Washington County Water Conservancy District is looking to add a full-time Water Treatment Plant Operator

to our team in St. George, UT. WCWCD is a dynamic team of great people, committed to meeting the increasing water needs of one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the US.

General Purpose

Operates district water treatment facilities; collects samples; collects and analyzes data to ensure water quality standards are met; assists with routine maintenance duties and special projects; and responds to emergency situations.

Supervision Received

Directly supervised by Water Treatment Plant Supervisor

Essential Functions

  • Operates water treatment plant equipment, including pump motors, valves, and mixers, per standard operating procedures
  • Performs plant security checks and acts as first responder to all emergencies involving water quality, operations, equipment, and hazardous materials.
  • Monitors and regulates flow rates, basin levels and water elevations by reading and recording gauges, meters, and computerized telemetry.
  • Operates chemical feed systems, prepares liquid chemical solutions, and loads dry feed hoppers.
  • Makes chemical dosage decisions and sets corresponding feed rates.
  • Performs laboratory analysis on water samples to determine daily treatment process.
  • Performs alkalinity, pH, hardness, chlorine residual, turbidity, and other related chemical tests.
  • Conducts routine repair and maintenance on all plant equipment.
  • Completes building maintenance tasks including cleaning, painting, plumbing, and janitorial tasks for the treatment plants.
  • Assists with special projects as requested.
  • Adheres to district safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience :

a. High school diploma or equivalent required, preference given to college education.

AND

b. Experience related to duties listed for this position is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic chemistry and math (algebra) as related to water treatment.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to accurately mix chemicals and calculate flow rates and chemical dosages.
  • Knowledge of water treatment processes and principles, associated rules and regulations, and related equipment.
  • Basic understanding of hydraulics and hydrology.
  • Ability to use personal computers and software including emails, texting, and electronic devices.
  • Ability to use district SCADA system for plant operation, monitoring, and data collection.
  • Ability to assist with studies to improve water quality.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as a forklift, chlorine hoist, quad, man lift, and various hand tools.
  • Ability to operate basic office machines such as copiers, printers, adding machines, calculators, and phones.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Read and write in English at a business level.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationship with associates, employees of other agencies, and the general public.
  • Shift work and on call work may be required in this position. May be required to work unconventional hours or shifts during emergency situations.

Special Qualifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Utah Drivers License and maintain insurability under the districts vehicle insurance policy
  • Utah Level IV Water Treatment Certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire
  • Must be willing to take and must pass a pre-employment drug test and submit to a criminal background check.

Working Environment:

Employee will spend time in water treatment and distribution facilities, in vehicle, in the regional service area performing site visits and/or participating in district events, and in quiet office environments. Individual should be comfortable in all these environments.
