Job Description Primary Function of Position: As part of product development groups at Intuitive, the Sr. Human Factors Engineer works closely with UX team interaction designers, visual designers, industrial designers, clinical engineers, system and software engineers, technical product managers, and other important functional teams. The Sr. Human Factors Engineer is a key contributor to inform and guide the development of new products, ensuring that those products are feasible, viable, and desirable. As a member of new and sustaining product-development project teams, the Sr. Human Factors Engineer drives as a key stakeholder within a creative and structured process to conduct user research, analyze and characterize use-related risks, and conduct usability testing of products prior to launch. They have primary responsibility for evaluating product designs with end-user test participants, creating usability risk analyses, and conducting final usability validation studies and reports. The Sr. Human Factors Engineer also works closely with regulatory, quality, and design controls groups to create the usability engineering documentation required for submission to medical device regulatory agencies. This particular role of Sr. Human Factors Engineer would be assigned to the Future Forward Business Unit but could potentially work with any of five related yet distinct business units focused on specific product platforms and/or services within Intuitive. The Sr. Human Factors Engineer would report to the Human Factors Manager of Future Forward. Brief descriptions of each business unit are as follows: Digital Business Unit: Focuses on User Experience with software and web-based products integrated with all the Intuitive products. ION System Business Unit: Supports development of an emerging product for systems, software, and instruments with specialized users in pulmonary/endoluminal treatment modalities. Da Vinci Multiport RAS Business Unit: Supports a wide array of multi-generational products and services, including robotic systems, instruments, and accessories, focusing on user interface, workflow, and safety. Da Vinci Single Port RAS Business Unit: Supports development on a growing and emerging product platform exploring and expanding into new RAS treatment areas. Future Forward Business Unit: Supports ongoing investment in transformational clinical technologies on a ten-year horizon. Roles and Responsibilities: Research: Plan, collect, and synthesize detailed insights on user interactions through interviews, simulations, direct observations, task analyses, and persona development. Support project-based and longitudinal research on cognitive/behavioral and ergonomic human factors topics. Design: Contribute to workflow and user interface designs, and negotiate design recommendations to mitigate use errors and improve usability. Develop usability requirements for user interface design, training, and labeling. Assist in creating and revising user-interface requirements documents. Advocate for the clinical caregiver experience, balancing user, customer, and business needs. Test: Design, execute, and report on usability evaluations at various stages of product development, from prototypes to validation testing in US and international markets. Interface with end-user customers internationally to gather design insights during complex usability testing activities. Analyze: Write and revise usability engineering documents such as task analyses, risk analyses, complaints summaries, use specifications, and test reports. Organize and assess results from field observations, surveys, and usability tests. Synthesize complex information into communications and presentations for product teams and leadership. Prepare documentation for regulatory submissions and respond to questions for additional justification. Sustain and Improve: Examine complaints from on-market products, update usability risk assessments, and escalate issues as necessary. Stay current with MDR regulations and best practices, advising management on potential improvements. Collaborate: Lead efforts to create and update usability risk analyses. Represent the Human Factors function on project teams. Coordinate human factors efforts across multiple projects. Manage usability-engineering activities within development projects, providing schedules and status updates.
